10 Ways to Write an Unforgettable Memoir | Shayla Raquel

Check out this most excellent post from Shayla on writing a memoir. Number One is a most important point. I always wanted to write a memoir but I stopped writing the drafts and deleted the sneak peeks I’d shared with my email list (so embarrassing lol) and decided to start over. I’ve learned so much since then with one of the major things being the difference between a memoir and autobiography.

1. Learn the differences between a memoir and an autobiography.
A common mistake is to pour your heart and soul into a book and market it as the wrong genre. An autobiography is a chronological telling of your life, but a memoir hones in on a specific timeline or event. It doesn’t mean you can’t have flashbacks or backstory; you can. But you must understand the big and subtle differences between the two before you write, publish, and market your story.

Ask yourself:

  • Does my story reflect on my entire life (autobiography), or a key aspect, theme, or event (memoir)?
  • Does my story start at the beginning of my life and progress to the end (autobiography), or does it start anywhere and move around in time and place (memoir)?
  • Does my story require hours of fact-checking (autobiography), or is it more personal, requiring less fact-checking (memoir)?

WP TIP 1

If you use more than one image in your posts, then use WordPress Publicize to automatically upload your post to Twitter, Facebook, etc, or, manually upload them, the image last inserted into your post, is the one that will be displayed on your media.

To avoid the wrong image being displayed, either:

Insert it LAST

OR

Select it as your ‘Featured Image’

Authors especially would probably prefer their Book Cover being displayed, rather than some other, random, image.

WP TIP 2

If you opt for using a Featured image, or, have the same image appear more than once in your post (as I’ve done on this post):

You DO NOT NEED to upload the same image for each separate appearance!

Select the same image to be inserted wherever you want it to be shown in the post.

This will save taking up unnecessary space in your media…

Running out of space in your WordPress Media Storage and thinking about paying for more?

Unless you are displaying your own images / photos, and WANT to have them full size

Before you spend any money, go through your Media Storage images and reduce their sizes

You might be shocked at how much longer you can work with the storage space you save.

Step 1:

Select an image and click on it to see it’s size (width x height in pixels)

and

how much it ‘weighs’ (i.e., how many KB or MB it is):

To reduce them, click on the Edit Image button shown under the image:

Republishing Posts: Don’t Forget to Update Your Links

Some time ago I spoke about the benefits of Respinning your blog posts. By respin I mean republishing them to your blog. This means that the post will show up again in the reader and your followers will also get an email notifying them of a new blog post.

This has great advantages to building up your blog, such as:

  • Older posts are seen by new readers
  • Important posts get more social media shares and reiterates key points for those who missed it
  • New Followers / Views

The list goes on with the key thing being new readers and more eyes on posts that may not have received much attention the first time around.

What I didn’t talk about is the not-so-good things about republishing content. One thing to keep in mind (especially if the post you are republishing did very well the first time and got lots of shares):

When you reschedule / republish a post to show up again and you linked it somewhere, the original link to the post will not work.

This means you would want to unlink the old and replace it with the new one. If you do not do this, when readers click on the original link they’ll get a “This post no longer exists” error message.

This post came about because I am literally in the process of doing this now with re-linking my Black History Fun Fact links. I rescheduled a few from 2015 but didn’t relink them. Yesterday, I viewed the page and noticed some links didn’t work and I am not sure how long it’s been that way. Oppsie. I searched my posts for the republished version with the new date, copied the link and linked the new one.

If you’d like to archive your posts (saving them to a page) or link a post to text:

Highlight the words you want to link.

Click on the link icon in your blog post editor…

…. in that little box, paste your link.

IF you want to have the page open in a new tab, click on the Link Options icon next to the blue button as seen above. A box will open that looks like…

….THIS

Check the Open link in new tab box. When people click on your link, it will open the page in a new tab. This is optional and up to you. Some readers prefer it and others don’t.

I would be careful republishing any post that received lots of reblogs and social media shares already. I would be careful because the links shared on social media may no longer work and you’ll have to manually announce/correct it. I would also not recommend republishing content too much (I’ve slowed down myself since the first article) Additionally, if the article lists data, statistics or in-depth research like that, I wouldn’t republish it UNLESS I also plan to update the data.

Posts I would respin:

  • Old posts that only received one, two, or three likes and no shares
  • Posts with important information but did not get many views and no shares
  • Poetry / Inspirational posts that never gets old but received not too many shares

Remember, if you republish/respin/repost an older article for more visibility and you’re linking that post, the republished post will have a new link (I also think you can change the link to keep it the same in the editor but I have not experienced this and this post is only in relation to my own experience.)

If you are republishing content and linked something to it, be sure to update the link so that when we click on it we are taken to the article, not an error message.

TandEFor me, indie publishing has consisted of a lot of trial-and-error to determine what things work and what things do not. Unlike other types of sales and marketing, as an author it is not only about selling books, but, to some degree, you are selling yourself. This is something I’m extremely uncomfortable with, but I’ve found some ways to adjust my approach to make it more tolerable.

Hard sell concept.

  • Blatantly asking people to buy your books doesn’t work. Instead, I’ve tried to use my blog, Facebook, and other social media to try to convince people that my work might be worth checking out. I do this by trying to entertain or teach with the material I post.

The PBS Blog Award Page

What a way to end the week! It’s been a long time since I’ve been nominated for a blog award. When I first began blogging in 2014, Blog Awards were a great motivation for me and a big part of helping to keep this blog going during those moments I felt like blah. Though I no longer participate in Blog Awards (Blog Award Free Since 1/20/16) I do acknowledge those who’ve nominated me and I have created a page for the awards. They are neatly stacked on the virtual shelf of The PBS Blog Awards page HERE.

Special thanks to Don Massenzio for nominating me for The Blogger Recognition Award. Every piece of support, every like, every comment, every re-blog, and every blog award gives this blog the fuel it needs to keep going. I still go through every like when I get the notification on my phone as if I don’t know who’s picture is coming up lol. They are just as important to me as the commentary and gives me the excitement I need to push onward.

Since I don’t actually participate in the Blog Awards I won’t go on to follow the rules but I would like to give the two pieces of blog advice, if I may.

 

  • Give two pieces of advice to new bloggers

 

  1. Make sure your blog is as easy to follow and navigate as possible. Keep it clean and the text easy to read (black text on white background always works). Be sure your blog has a Blog Follow button. Dashboard > Appearance > Widgets > I would recommend the one that says “Add an email sign-up form to allow people to follow your blog”
  1. Network with others. Comment back to comments left on your blog, visit the blogs of those who follow or liked you. Share content from other blogs. Carve out a day where you do nothing but read and interact with other blogs. Do for other blogs what you’d want people to do for you. Share their content across social media like you’d want them to do for you. Like their post and comment as you’d want them to do for you. Not just for the sake of trying to get something out of it but because good always comes back. Sitting on your hands wishing for more engagement won’t change a thing.

Now, go change the world.
