Book and E-Reader- Nora W.

It has been a year of Sundays since I did a book review on this blog, but when this book came along, I couldn’t help myself. It gave me so many feels I couldn’t help myself!

Here are my thoughts:

Nora White is a farm girl from Mississippi who dreams of moving to Harlem and becoming a writer. Her biggest wish is to write alongside the legends of the era like Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston!

Ok, I must stop here! This book was after my heart. I absolutely love both Langston and Zora! In fact the main character of my first book is named for them. I was swooning when the main character not only befriended, but became a contemporary of these icons! Nora was living the life J would have wanted, had I lived in the 1920s.

The book flashed back and forth between Nora’s family back…

Yecheilyah’s Book Reviews – Talon, Come Fly with Me by Gigi Sedlmayer

Publisher: Aurora House (March 16, 2014)

Talon Come Fly With Me is about a small girl searching for her purpose in life. Matica and her family live in the village of Pucara in Peru where the Indians have restricted Matica from playing with their children because of her small size. Thinking she’s possessed by an evil spirit it leaves Matica feeling lonely and without purpose in life because she’s so small. The story opens with Matica and her little brother Aikon searching for food to feed Matica’s birds. Aikon is in a hurry to play with his friend Emelio which makes Matica sad. She admires her brother having friends since she has none. Well, she almost has none.

The story is about Matica’s friendship with a family of Condors, the largest vultures on Earth and the largest land birds. In a place, she called Ramah, which Matica named after the biblical city Ramah, Matica befriends Tamo and Tima, the condor couple. There is only one problem. The condors are nearly extinct and are being hunted by poachers. They only lay one egg a year and the poachers are on a quest to steal the bird’s egg which they can get paid lots of money for. Matica has learned how to communicate with the birds in a way that the Indians cannot but can she help them to save their egg?

I feel funny reviewing this book seeing that there are already over one hundred reviews! I can see why, it’s a cute story, well-written, and simple enough for young children to enjoy. Personally, I enjoyed the symbolism tied into Matica’s size and that of the birds. The Condors are huge which makes them look clumsy and weird and Crayn, Matica’s father, thinks they are ugly (I have to agree, they do look funny. Sorry Matica lol). Similarly, Matica is small and odd looking to the Indians who has made her an outcast.

I loved the mention of the birds being pushed off the cliff at six months old to learn to fly. To me, the entire book was Matica being pushed off the cliff so that she can learn to fly. I don’t want to spoil it for you, so I’ll leave it there. This is book one in the Talon series however the story is well-written and has a satisfying ending so it can be read as a standalone.

I recommend this book to middle-grade readers and pre-teens.

In Waiting in the Wings, Stevie’s mother, Dot is sick and getting worse as time progresses. Dorothy Eliza Wilkins or Dot had a breech birth. (My twin sister was breech as well. It means that she was born feet first instead of head first.) Sadly, Dot suffered a dislocated hip due to being pulled from the womb by her left leg and developed osteomyelitis at four years of age after a fall.

This would play a major role in her adult life, especially as she ages and her body deteriorates and her mobility becomes limited.

The relationship between Dot and Stevie is one in which Dot has become the child and Stevie the adult. Both mother and daughter struggle to endure this transition, which understandably takes its toll on them both. Stevie helps her mom through her depression by reliving old memories.

We are invited into Stevie and Dot’s past and watch how it influences Stevie in real time. We watch her examine her relationship with Dot while enduring the trials of caring for a sick parent while balancing her own illness.

Yecheilyah’s Book Reviews – The Living Miracle: A Love Story by Donna D. Vaal

Step into the 31st Century, where synthetic babies are born, and man is God. On June 4, 3044, Hiroto, the grandson of Master Izanagi Okamura, is born. The self-professed Japanese God of the Creation of Life, Izanagi has revolutionized life with his synthetic baby creation. Women are no longer capable of giving birth and are barren in this new world. Instead, babies are conceived in a Petrie dish, and there is more than one kind of living being.

There are humans, developed by a male sperm piercing a female egg, and then there are the Mosouka’s non-humans with imitation cells with the same DNA structure as humans. Each human is born with a genetically matching Mosouka, which will be given to them on their fifth birthday. And so, on the fifth birthday of Hiroto Okamura, he would be introduced to L4-13354, his humanoid Mosouka.

Considered nothing more than a human doll kept alive by advanced technology, Mosouka’s are not real. Noticing that his Mosouka is exhausted after playing with him and his friends, Hiroto cares for her with the gentle tenderness of someone whose human. Seeing this, the children tease him, and one angry kid pushes L4 over the side of the Yacht, and things will never be the same for Hiroto and his humanoid.

It is under the water, like an immersing or baptism, that L4 breaks her arm and hears the voice of the Almighty, who gives her his spirit, and she becomes a living being. Not only does she save Hiroto, who jumps into the water after her, but she feels pain and cries real tears.

There’s only one problem: No one can know she’s real.

Hiroto and L4, who he later names La’Besa, must conceal her true identity and discover the truth of their union together. With humanity’s disbelief in the true creator, how will he react to the living miracle whose presence is to destroy all that he holds dear?

I truly enjoyed reading this book and was very much engaged in the story line.

What’s the connection with Hiroto and La’Besa and the significance of her uniqueness? Why was she chosen to live and the other Mosouka’s, were not? What happens when Hiroto’s Grandfather, God of this World, discovers La’Besa’s humanity?

Yecheilyah’s Book Reviews – Listen (Earthen Witch Book 3) by Sarah Doughty

Title: Listen (Earthen Witch Book 3)

Author: Sarah Doughty

Series: Earthen Witch

ISBN: 9781370998340

Language: English.

Published: October 7, 2016

Categories: Fiction » Fantasy » Urban, Fiction » Romance » Paranormal

Sarah Doughty’s latest novel, Listen, is book three in The Earthen Witch series. While I have not read the other two books, book three can catch you up.

I invite you to enter a universe that is literally out of this world, one where there are pixies, vampires, werewolves, shamans, wolves of extraordinary prowess, a cat that is actually a Sphinx, a ghost that inhabits a little boy’s body, and, of course, the main character, Earthen Witch Aisling Green.

As an earthen witch, Aisling possesses supernatural abilities that show up even during her hot and steamy sessions with Connor Jennings, her soul mate (literally). Also a witch, Connor is Aisling’s supernatural soul mate and fellow earthen, though he is still trying to figure out how to access his powers however he needs to.

The story picks up when the team realizes two of their team members, Liam and Jon, have gone missing and set out to look for them among a common enemy: Renata Crane, a New Orleans voodoo priestess who wants more power than she has. She wants Aisling the witch, Angela the shamaness, and even the power and blood of Liam, the vampire Aisling is seeing in her dream sights. The war is on, but Aisling is sick, throwing up and having fainting spells. Something is wrong with Aisling; her powers are not as strong as they were. How would this influence the battle with Renata?

You would have to Listen to find out.

The pacing was slower than I would have liked in the beginning, but the story is written well, with enough description to help those who have not read the first two books. While it is not my ideal read, plenty of action and revelations keep you on your toes.

*I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*

Sarah Doughty’s latest novel, Listen is Book Three in The Earthen Witch series and I must mention here that I have not read the other two books. However, Book Three is fully capable of catching you up. Literally out of this world, I invite you to step into a place of vampires, werewolves, a shamaness and wolf extraordinaire, a cat that is really a Sphinx, a ghost that possess the body of a little boy, pixie’s and let’s not forget the protagonist herself, Earthen Witch Aisling Green.

As an Earthen Witch, Aisling possess supernatural abilities that show up even during her hot and steamy sessions with Connor Jennings, her soul mate (literally). Also a witch, Connor is Aisling’s Supernatural Soul Mate and fellow Earthen, though he is still trying to figure out how to access his powers in the way that he needs to. If Aisling got hurt sparing for instance, Connor wouldn’t be able to offer his blood’s healing powers to her, not like the master Vampire Liam. In fact, it was during sparing that the dream-sight began, a series of blackouts that causes Aisling to see fog so cloudy that she cannot see or understand what’s happening.

The story picks up when the team— vampires, werewolves, shamaness and wolf extraordinaire, a cat that is really a Sphinx, a ghost that possess the body of a little boy, pixie (and a partridge and a pear tree…lol hee hee, had to say it)— realizes two of their team members, Liam and Jon, have gone missing and set out to look for them among a common enemy: Renata Crane, a New Orleans voodoo priestess who wants more power than she has. She wants Aisling the witch, Angela the shamaness, and even the power and blood of Liam, the vampire Aisling is seeing in her dream-sights. The war is on but Aisling is sick, throwing up and having fainting spells. Something is not right with Aisling and her powers are not as strong as they were. How would this influence the battle with Renata? Listen to find out.

I’m not into the whole witch thing and I thought the beginning was a bit slow, however the story is written with enough description to help those who have not read the first two books to get a thorough understanding of what’s going on. It’s not my ideal read but it is well-written and those who are interested in stepping into the dark side will definitely have their hands full with this one.

Yecheilyah’s Book Reviews – Rise of the Chosen by Anna Kopp

Title: Rise of the Chosen: Lifeblood Series Book 1

Author: Anna Kopp

Print Length: 193 pages

Publisher: Blue Moon Publishers (October 4, 2016)

Publication Date: October 4, 2016

ASIN: B01KL51PKC

Unlike The Walking Dead, Rise of The Chosen: Lifeblood has a more unique and exciting twist. In this YA dystopian fantasy, Samantha Shields lives in a world where the apocalypse came in the form of people who began to rise from the dead or The Waking. The Waking wiped out entire countries and changed the structure of normal society that collapsed when the dead came back to life. Well, sort of.

Driven by an insatiable hunger for blood, The Woken make up most of the world’s rising dead population and are determined to ravage and destroy. On the other hand, however, there are The Chosen, people who died and came back with lifeblood flowing through their veins. Unlike the Woken, The Chosen still maintains their humanity while possessing the physical strength and superhuman power of The Woken. While self-sustaining communities exist, the threat of the undead caused organizations to form to help to protect the living.

In book one, Samantha is promoted in The Watch Academy when rescued after being attacked by a Woken. With one human and one chosen per mission, the plot thickens, and tensions rise when Samantha and her team discover secrets within the group. With Chosen struggling to be accepted by their human counterparts, Samantha has no idea how deep the rabbit hole goes. Woken, Chosen, Human, it’s a war of the worlds in Anna Kopp’s Rise of The Chosen.

What struck me about this story is that it could have gone in so many different directions. The concept is so interesting symbolically that I saw it from so many different perspectives. It could have followed the typical walking dead theme as a zombie book, but Anna shook things up. I love the concept of having a group of people chosen to carry the lifeblood in their veins that are humanity’s saving grace. This alone, the action and the mystery of it all will keep you reading until the end.
