Sarah Doughty’s latest novel, Listen, is book three in The Earthen Witch series. While I have not read the other two books, book three can catch you up.

I invite you to enter a universe that is literally out of this world, one where there are pixies, vampires, werewolves, shamans, wolves of extraordinary prowess, a cat that is actually a Sphinx, a ghost that inhabits a little boy’s body, and, of course, the main character, Earthen Witch Aisling Green.

As an earthen witch, Aisling possesses supernatural abilities that show up even during her hot and steamy sessions with Connor Jennings, her soul mate (literally). Also a witch, Connor is Aisling’s supernatural soul mate and fellow earthen, though he is still trying to figure out how to access his powers however he needs to.

The story picks up when the team realizes two of their team members, Liam and Jon, have gone missing and set out to look for them among a common enemy: Renata Crane, a New Orleans voodoo priestess who wants more power than she has. She wants Aisling the witch, Angela the shamaness, and even the power and blood of Liam, the vampire Aisling is seeing in her dream sights. The war is on, but Aisling is sick, throwing up and having fainting spells. Something is wrong with Aisling; her powers are not as strong as they were. How would this influence the battle with Renata?

You would have to Listen to find out.

The pacing was slower than I would have liked in the beginning, but the story is written well, with enough description to help those who have not read the first two books. While it is not my ideal read, plenty of action and revelations keep you on your toes.

Sarah Doughty’s latest novel, Listen is Book Three in The Earthen Witch series and I must mention here that I have not read the other two books. However, Book Three is fully capable of catching you up. Literally out of this world, I invite you to step into a place of vampires, werewolves, a shamaness and wolf extraordinaire, a cat that is really a Sphinx, a ghost that possess the body of a little boy, pixie’s and let’s not forget the protagonist herself, Earthen Witch Aisling Green.

As an Earthen Witch, Aisling possess supernatural abilities that show up even during her hot and steamy sessions with Connor Jennings, her soul mate (literally). Also a witch, Connor is Aisling’s Supernatural Soul Mate and fellow Earthen, though he is still trying to figure out how to access his powers in the way that he needs to. If Aisling got hurt sparing for instance, Connor wouldn’t be able to offer his blood’s healing powers to her, not like the master Vampire Liam. In fact, it was during sparing that the dream-sight began, a series of blackouts that causes Aisling to see fog so cloudy that she cannot see or understand what’s happening.

The story picks up when the team— vampires, werewolves, shamaness and wolf extraordinaire, a cat that is really a Sphinx, a ghost that possess the body of a little boy, pixie (and a partridge and a pear tree…lol hee hee, had to say it)— realizes two of their team members, Liam and Jon, have gone missing and set out to look for them among a common enemy: Renata Crane, a New Orleans voodoo priestess who wants more power than she has. She wants Aisling the witch, Angela the shamaness, and even the power and blood of Liam, the vampire Aisling is seeing in her dream-sights. The war is on but Aisling is sick, throwing up and having fainting spells. Something is not right with Aisling and her powers are not as strong as they were. How would this influence the battle with Renata? Listen to find out.

I’m not into the whole witch thing and I thought the beginning was a bit slow, however the story is written with enough description to help those who have not read the first two books to get a thorough understanding of what’s going on. It’s not my ideal read but it is well-written and those who are interested in stepping into the dark side will definitely have their hands full with this one.

Not willing to cope with Washington’s brutal winters, Kailani breaks up with restaurant owner Geoffrey and leaves her job to return home, returning to the warm weather and beauty of Hawaii, black sand, and the curling waves of the Pacific Ocean. In preparation to return, Kailani searches for employment and secures a position as personal chef to Lars Jorgensen, owner of Kaimana Surf Company, and his wife, Dr. Barbara Merriweather, on the West Coast of the Big Island in the district of North Kohala.

When she arrives, the Jorgensen’s house is beautiful, and this sous-chef is ill-prepared for what awaits beyond the lush tropical gardens of palm trees, midnight jasmine, red ginger, and pergola laden with hanging Jade. As Kailani settles in, a series of events begin to unfold that question the stability of the Jorgensen household. First, Lars and Barbie don’t seem to like each other much, which could have something to do with Barbie’s roaming eye.

When Barbie asks Kailani to make more nutritious meals to reduce her family’s craving for junk food, the kids dislike Kailani’s healthy cooking. Nevertheless, this is not the full scope of Kailani’s issues. As Geoffrey relocates to Hawaii to be with her, things start to become strange, and a body is discovered on the Jorgensens’ property.

I liked reading about the kinds of meals Kailani would make for the family because she is a chef, especially as she started to get inventive to convince the kids to eat healthily. I got a sense of Hawaiian culture through it.

I also like how the plot focuses on this one family. That gives the story a TV show feel, which I like. Whenever I put my Kindle down, I think about what I will read in tomorrow’s House of the Hanging episode. The Jorgensen’s are off the chain.

What’s really going on in the house with the hanging Jade?

Yecheilyah’s Book Reviews – All Good Stories by Linda G. Hill

Title: All Good Stories

Author: Linda G. Hill

Familiar with Linda through her blog, Life in Progress, I expected humor. What I didn’t expect was to finish the book in two hours. Everyone knows I love a good laugh, and Linda did not disappoint. All Good Stories is a romantic comedy about friends Jupiter and Xavier and takes place mostly at the bookstore where Xavier works. From the onset, we can tell there’s a bit more heart invested on Xavier’s part. The cute way Jupiter shortens his name, the way he dreams of being with her, and the added bonus of being her best friend.

However, Jupiter’s got a new novel. It wouldn’t be so bad if it didn’t lead her to Bob the Blogger, a novelist and blogger obsessed with alliterations whose profile picture looks nothing like the real him. After a steamy three hours of commenting back and forth with Jupiter, Bob has agreed to critique her novel. He has written her three love poems with the added warning that he will not use the first letter of her best friends’ name (because he’s a Serial Alliterator and X just wouldn’t go well with his alliterations) and has given her his phone number.

Bob’s weirdness causes Xavier’s growing love and concern for Jupiter to thicken into a hilarious investigation. Plus, what’s Jupiter’s book about anyway?

I enjoyed the pacing of the read and that it continued toward the end. It’s a short read, but it didn’t need to drag on beyond what the author gave us. It’s like a literary treat if ever you’re waiting at the doctor’s office or airport and could use a good chuckle or two.

This book is not only a comedy but also has an important message. The seriousness of meeting people online and of rushed relationships has been the focal point of many books I’ve been reading lately. All Good Stories is definitely a good story and well-written.

Yecheilyah’s Book Reviews – Rise of the Chosen by Anna Kopp

Title: Rise of the Chosen: Lifeblood Series Book 1

Author: Anna Kopp

Print Length: 193 pages

Publisher: Blue Moon Publishers (October 4, 2016)

Publication Date: October 4, 2016

ASIN: B01KL51PKC

Unlike The Walking Dead, Rise of The Chosen: Lifeblood has a more unique and exciting twist. In this YA dystopian fantasy, Samantha Shields lives in a world where the apocalypse came in the form of people who began to rise from the dead or The Waking. The Waking wiped out entire countries and changed the structure of normal society that collapsed when the dead came back to life. Well, sort of.

Driven by an insatiable hunger for blood, The Woken make up most of the world’s rising dead population and are determined to ravage and destroy. On the other hand, however, there are The Chosen, people who died and came back with lifeblood flowing through their veins. Unlike the Woken, The Chosen still maintains their humanity while possessing the physical strength and superhuman power of The Woken. While self-sustaining communities exist, the threat of the undead caused organizations to form to help to protect the living.

In book one, Samantha is promoted in The Watch Academy when rescued after being attacked by a Woken. With one human and one chosen per mission, the plot thickens, and tensions rise when Samantha and her team discover secrets within the group. With Chosen struggling to be accepted by their human counterparts, Samantha has no idea how deep the rabbit hole goes. Woken, Chosen, Human, it’s a war of the worlds in Anna Kopp’s Rise of The Chosen.

What struck me about this story is that it could have gone in so many different directions. The concept is so interesting symbolically that I saw it from so many different perspectives. It could have followed the typical walking dead theme as a zombie book, but Anna shook things up. I love the concept of having a group of people chosen to carry the lifeblood in their veins that are humanity’s saving grace. This alone, the action and the mystery of it all will keep you reading until the end.

Yecheilyah’s Book Reviews – Repent at Leisure by Stevie Turner

Title: Repent at Leisure

Author: Stevie Turner

Print Length: 238

Publication Date: March 31, 2016

Publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform (Paperback)

Language: English

ISBN-13: 978-1530802838

When Paul McAdam awakens to find an unknown woman in his bed, he regrets his previous night out and is disturbed by the stranger’s presence. Paul is agitated and wants nothing but to get Catherine “Cat” Taylor out of his home. Despite Paul’s irritation, he entertains the strangers company and the two begin an odd relationship in which the woman moves into his flat.

Paul regrets going home, staying out late and lying about his whereabouts as he tries to avoid being in the woman’s presence despite she’s living in his house. His demeanor changes however when he meets the love of his life, Anita Fairflax. Despite the short time they’ve known each other, she is his world and the young couple is lovesick. They decide to take their relationship to the next level when Paul brings Anita to his flat.

Hiding evidence of Cat’s existence, Paul can’t let the love of his life know that he is living with another woman. Sure, Cat means nothing to him but that won’t matter if Anita finds out they aren’t alone. Successfully getting through the preliminaries, the two make love and end a perfect night. That is until morning comes and Paul walks into his bedroom to find Cat laid out on the bed. Dead.

What happens next is a series of investigations into the death of Catherine Taylor amid Anita and Paul’s growing relationship. Everything seems normal until Paul’s behavior shifts into one of an angry boy trapped in a man’s body. Will Anita marry a man she knows very little about? Find out in Repent at Leisure.

When the author gave me the description of what this book was about, I could not wait to dig in. The story-line was interesting and I wondered about the meaning behind the title. The book takes off slowly but things pick up a bit when Paul starts to act weird. I love the overall message and the repentance aspect at the end. I won’t say anymore as I am not sure I won’t spoil it! While I enjoyed the story, it was predictable for me personally and the pacing like I said was a little slow, however I did enjoy the story. I wonder if there will be another part as I’d be interested to see where Paul and Anita’s relationship goes.

I will also say that this book presents an important message for today’s youth in regard to rushing into relationships and I’d recommend it for any young person looking to settle down. Take your time young people! As a general rule of thumb, it takes a couple years for most people to drop their masks. Relationships is mostly built on getting to know each other and that takes time.

#Book #Review – Ivory Dawn (The Razor’s Adventures) by P.S. Bartlett

Ivory Dawn is a short story and the first book in The Razor’s Adventures Pirate Series. The prequel to Demons and Pearls, the story is about four young women living life on the banks of the Ashley River. All cousins, they are led by Ivory Shepherd who quickly emerges as the group’s leader. When the women are raided by a group of pirate men seeking to do them harm, it is apparent that these are not ordinary women. With blades and guns, they prove prepared to handle their own. However, the battle is not yet finished. Captain Christopher Barclay of Demon Sea and his men pay the women a visit and so is the beginning of The Razor Adventures.

Ivory, Miranda, Cass, and Keara have obviously been through some challenging times which have helped strengthen them in many ways. This first book serves as an introduction to the characters and opens with the attack on their farm. We then watch as the women defend themselves while protecting each other with fearlessness. As a woman who strongly believes in survival and preparation, I think it’s important for women to know how to defend themselves in any situation. I enjoyed how the author also managed to show us their soft, emotional side as they sat around the fire to ponder their now serious situation. Despite how tough, they are still women and I think it was important to show off that feminine caring side of them as well. The side that is concerned and warm as opposed to hard and cold. Bartlett highlighted this emotion well against the warmth of the fire. And as Ivory takes hold of the rum and four glasses, though the strongest of the group, I find she has probably suffered the most. It will be interesting to see what kind of pain and struggle is behind those eyes.

I’m a little behind on this series so the next adventure for me is Demons and Pearls, which I am reading next. I look forward to reading more about the women’s backstory and seeing how the adventure develops.
